The word Scientology is taken from the Latin scio, which means "knowing in the fullest sense of the word," and the Greek word logos, meaning "study of". It literally means "knowing how to know". Scientology is an "applied religious philosophy and itself is defined as "The study and handling of the spirit (i.e. you) in relationship to itself, universes and other life.

Scientology addresses the spiritual being, you, and directly raises his awareness and ability, and by so doing, he also becomes increasingly able to overcome the negative factors that impair him. In other words, in Scientology you won't be told what to do with your life or how to solve your problems, instead through various techniques of therapy or training you will be come more aware and more able and thus better equipped to solve your own problems from a different perspective.

Scientology is the largest body of practical/philosophical/spiritual knowledge ever assembled this side of the pond from the Vedas. It covers the technology of how to improve any aspect of life from knowing how to study, Applied Scholastics, to becoming free of drugs, Narconon, to solutions for the criminals, Criminon, to various communication formula and courses on improving marriages, relationships, and administrative technology to run any organization or business.

"Scientology is the science of knowing how to know answers. It is a wisdom in the tradtition of ten thousand years of search in Asia and Western civilization. It is the Science of Human Affairs which treats the livingness and beingness of Man and demonstrates to him a pathway to greater freedom....

There is a basic series of assumptions in processing, which assumptions do not alter the philosophy of Scientology. The first of thse assumptions is that Man can have a greater freedom. The second is that so long as he remains relatively sane, he desires a greater freedom. And the third assumption is that the auditor desires to deliver a greater freedom to that person with whom he is working. If these assumptions are not agreed upon and are not used, then auditing degenerates into "the observation of effect" which is, of course, a goalless, soulless pursuit and is, indeed, a pursuit which has degraded what is called "modern science."

The goal of processing is to bring an individual into such thorough communication with the physical universe that he can regain the power and ability of his own considerations (postulates).
